Additional Tasks

In most projects some additional tasks are required:

  • Graphics/arts localization - pictures, icons, splash screens, artwork, etc.

  • Screen captures - screen shots from the localized software

  • Desktop publishing - document formatting, table of contents, index, etc.

Click here to read about multimedia-specific tasks (i.e. audio/video recording/editing) that may be required.

Graphics/Arts

A typical project usually has many logos, icons, buttons, toolbars, splash screens, etc. - in the software, help or documentation files - that need to be localized. The graphics/arts localization ranges from a mere replacement of fancy formatted text to complete remaking of complex bitmaps.

Screen Captures

Screen shots (copies of the computer screen image when a given dialog box or other software element is displayed) are captured from the localized software. The image files are edited, converted to a proper format, and placed in the software, help and/or documentation files.

When a localized software build is not available or is not reliable, screen shots from the original software must be edited. Dialog box titles, command and menu names, text messages, etc. must be replaced by their translated counterparts, using the same typeface and font size, so the resulting image be what the localized software is supposed to be.

Desktop Publishing

All printed documentation files demand some DTP work. At this stage, formatting conventions are checked, character and paragraph styles are applied, pages are renumbered, tables of contents and indices are generated, and hard copies are produced.

A thorough review is performed and any faults are corrected. As an option, file format conversions are performed.
